New Users
The steps for new users are dependent on the experimental technique. A brief description for X-ray crystallography (XRC) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), can be found in the tabs below. Details of each experimental technique can be found in the above links. All experiments can either be run by XRCF staff or individual users after appropriate training.
Please acknowledge Beckman Institute for their support of the X-Ray Crystallography Facility at Caltech in all published materials, details in the acknowledgement page. When any data obtained in the XRCF is published please email the citation to the director.
New external users should contact the director.
In order to determine a structure, all we need are some good crystals of the compound, a charge number, and a completed XRC Sample Submission Form (last updated June 2020). If you are unsure whether your crystals are suitable contact XRCF staff. When bringing your samples do not remove the crystallization solvent which can cause them to degrade.
For Air Stable Compounds
- Add your name to the XRC queue
- Bring the crystals (clearly labeled) along with a completed XRC Sample Submission Form (last updated June 2020) to the lab, there is a drop off area to the right of the door inside BI 110.
For Air Sensitive Compounds
- Add your name to the XRC queue
- You will be contacted when the instrument is available and arrangements will be made to handle your sample in the most appropriate manner.
- A completed XRC Sample Submission Form (last updated June 2020) should be uploaded to the submission folder, brought with your crystals, or filled out in the lab.
Individuals are encouraged to collect their own data. Anyone interested in collecting their own data should contact the director to discuss instrument training. The first step of the training will be to take the EHS X-Ray Diffraction safety course. Once completed, we will familiarize you with the collection and processing of X-ray diffraction data.
Powder X-ray diffraction data can be done with the assistance of facility personnel or independently after sufficient training.
Staff Assisted Collection (additional fee may apply)
Any samples that will be collected by facility staff should be brought to the lab (clearly labeled) along with a completed XRPD Sample Submission Form (last updated June 2020).
Independent Users
Caltech users who will be running more than a few samples are encouraged to take safety and instrument training to become independent users. Details can be found on the XRPD Training page.
